MUSEUMS  &  SITES

The history of Cimarron is rich and interesting, and visitors can still enjoy it today! Several buildings and sites stand as a testament to the town's wilder days.  Philmont Scout Ranch also offers several museums from a fine villa to an interpretive fort.

HISTORIC CHASE RANCH
In Cimarron. –
Founded in 1869, the Chase Ranch was successfully owned and operated by the Chase family for over 143 years. The historic adobe ranch house offers a glimpse of ranch life starting around the time of the Colfax County Land Grant War, through the territorial & statehood periods in into modern times. This ranch and the Chase family where instrumental in transforming western ranching into what it is today!
 
During the summer months, guided tours are available of the main house, grounds, orchards and tack room. Site includes restrooms, picnic amenities and a gift shop.

CIMARRON AREA VETERAN'S MEMORIAL
This memorial represents and honors past, present, and future veterans in the Cimarron area and the military service of Cimarron area residents' family members.
Located on Hwy 64 adjacent from the Visitors' Center.

KIT CARSON MUSEUM AT RAYADO
At Philmont.  Staff at the Kit Carson Museum dress in period clothing and demonstrate frontier skills and crafts like blacksmithing, cooking, shooting, and farming. Each room in the museum is outfitted with reproduction furniture and objects typical of New Mexico in the 1850s. The Rayado Trading Company, located at the museum, sells books, maps, reproduction tools and equipment, moccasins, and blankets.
7 miles south of Philmont's headquarters on New Mexico Highway 21.
Admission is free.

OLD AZTEC MILL MUSEUM

In Cimarron.  New Mexico's Most Unusual Museum!  Built in 1864 by Lucien B. Maxwell.  The Aztec Grist Mill is in the southwest corner of Cimarron.  It was built to provide ground grains for the Maxwell Ranch and the Jicarilla Apache Indian Reservation, as well as Santa Fe Trail travelers. Today it is operated as a museum and houses working mill parts and life-size figures of local history.

Open approximately Memorial Day through Labor Day.   We are staffed entirely by volunteers.  We apologize in advance if we're closed during stated hours due to volunteer unavailability that day.  Please call ahead to ensure that we'll be open.

OLD TOWN CIMARRON WALKING TOUR
In Cimarron.  Stop by any local business or our Visitors' Center and pick up a self-guided Historic Walking Tour of Old Town Cimarron map and its companion, A Brief History of Cimarron. The historic walking tour includes a look at the old jail, stage office, St. James Hotel, and more.  In all there are 14 historic sites dating back to the mid 1800s within a short 30-60 minute walk. Brass plaques mounted on stone pillars guide the way and present information about each historic site, and local history, including the Santa Fe Trail, Lucien Maxwell and his 1,713,000-acre Land Grant, and the Colfax County War.

PHILMONT SCOUT RANCH MUSEUM & SETON MEMORAL LIBRARY & THE NATIONAL SCOUTING MUSEUM

Philmont is the largest Scout Ranch in the world, providing high adventure treks to thousands of Boy Scouts every year. Four museums are open to the public, providing both a glimpse into history and a look at the history of Scouting.

The National Scouting Museum had their Grand Opening on September 15, 2018, and is open for visitors.

SANTA FE TRAIL BYWAY INTERPRETIVE CENTER
In Cimarron.  On Highway 64, smack dab in the center of town, across from the visitors' center, you will see our fantastic Santa Fe Trail Byway Interpretive Center featuring historical information and photographs. Please stop by and enjoy this unique history of Cimarron.

ST. JAMES HOTEL
In Cimarron.  You’ll find unrivaled peace and serenity at the Express St. James Hotel in Cimarron, New Mexico. It hasn’t always been that quiet. A community full of frontier history, Cimarron and its vintage Hotel are indelibly marked by the turbulent days of westward expansion in northeast New Mexico.  Offering historic or modern rooms.  Historical gallery in downstairs hallway off of lobby.

THE VILLA PHILMONTE
At Philmont.  The Villa Philmonte was the summer home of Waite and Genevieve Phillips. It was constructed in the Spanish Mediterranean style from 1926 to 1927 and it is 28,400 square feet in size. The Villa Philmonte is a house museum today. Tour guides tell the story of the Phillips family, their Philmont Ranch, and the gifting of that ranch in two parcels to the Boy Scouts of America, 1938 and 1941.
